Selecting a New Water Heater for Your Tucson Area Home

If you need a new water heater in your Tucson home, our experts help by performing a capacity test to determine the right size, identify a unit that meets or exceeds energy standards, and matches your budget.

There are four main considerations to keep in mind:

  • Type: Tankless water heaters utilize burners to quickly heat water as it runs through a heat exchanger without the need for storage in a tank. Traditional tank water heaters store and heat water in an insulated tank.

  • Capacity: There is nothing worse than running out of hot water.  The most important capacity consideration is the “first-hour rating” (FHR), which is the measure of how much hot water the heater will deliver in an hour of high usage.

  • Efficiency: The higher the “energy factor” (EF) of a traditional tank storage water heater, the more efficient it is. Gas water heaters have an EF between 0.50 and 0.60, with some high-efficiency models around 0.80.

  • Cost: Often the least expensive water heaters are the most expensive to operate, so look for a high-efficiency unit. It may cost a little more initially but will result in reduced operating costs in the long run.
