Why You Shouldn’t Keep Items Hidden in Your Vents?

Can you name all of the movies and TV shows where someone hides a slew of valuable items in their vents? We’re sure you can at least name a good few! Remember that show Dexter, who was basically the killer that killed other serial killers? If you’ve seen the show, then you’ll remember how he hid glass slides of his victim’s blood in his vent if you don’t remember. But that’s beside the point we are trying to make today. Even though you’ve seen this done on television (and now Netflix) for your entire life, it’s not safe or smart to hide anything in those vents. Here’s why…

  • You’ll most likely lose your items: Air ducts circulate air throughout the day, meaning that it perpetuates constant motions any time you turn the air or heat on. Because most of us have at least one of the two running continuously, there is a good chance your items will get lost in the larger air duct system. This doesn’t apply to all items, however. It really comes down to the weight of the things you’ve hidden in there. For instance, any important documents or cash might not be there the next time you check on them.
  • You won’t get as much air flow coming out of your vents: It should seem pretty obvious that if you decide to put a large object inside of your vent, that you won’t be getting a whole lot of air flow out of it. However, it won’t just be a problem for the air flow. Vents that have objects obstructing them can damage the fins of the entire vent cover, and lead to eventual system breakdown. It will also cause your HVAC unit to use more energy than necessary in order to provide an equal amount of air flow throughout the various rooms in your home.
