Recovering Power – Flipping the Circuit Breaker

Do you have 5 daughter in your home who love nothing more than running 5 separate hair dryers allat the same time? Is your home electric system begging for help? Do they reliably knock it out at least once a week? Well then, you are probably already an expert at resetting the circuit breaker to get power back. For everyone else, we are here to help you learn about how to reset a circuit breaker.

Locating the Electrical Service Panel

Most homes have one single electrical service panel through which their home electrical system is run. It is usually located in either the basement or the garage. If you can’t find it in either of those locations, you can check in coat or broom closets. Some homes will place the electrical service panel near the hot water heater. It is there somewhere, so just keep looking! It will turn up.

The Next Step

Now that you have found the electrical service panel, you need to locate the tripped breaker. If it is the only one that has been tripped, this should be rather easy. It is going to be the only one facing the opposite direction as all the rest. Usually, breakers should have a labelled “on” and “off” position. Alternatively, some breakers are painted red on a single side. This side will show when the breaker has been tripped.

Now that you have located the tripped breaker all that is left is flipping it. Return the breaker to the “on” position. The breaker will click when it has been returned to the correct position. If the breaker trips again, you make have a more severe problem. If this occurs, you should contact an electrician.
