October 21, 2016

When you think ‘plumbing tools,’ no doubt your mind goes to that most trusty of devices, the Plunger. While that may be the first line of defense in any plumbing emergency, it might surprise you to know the vast variety of tools that may be needed for the job. Of course, plumbing relates to all the water lines in and out of your home, which to gain access to you’ll need a wide assortment of tools. A Stillson (pipe) wrench is the most commonly needed tool to undo the pipe fittings and comes in a range of sizes based on the length of the handle.

Quick History: The first pipe wrench was made by Daniel C. Stillson while working as a mechanic. The patent was issued to Stillson on October 12, 1869.

The Stillson isn’t the only wrench in a plumber’s life, far from it. There are basin wrenches, adjustable and crescent wrenches, and more. What else will you find in a plumber’s tool box? A basic list would include a tape measure, a ball point pen, pencil, pocket knife/multitool, Thermometer, key hole saw, the wrenches above. That’s just the basics. If we look at the full breadth of a plumber’s arsenal we’d see in a kit a claw hammer, pipe cutters (of the mini, medium, and internal varieties) as well as hand saws, hacksaw, crow bar, files, chisels, screwdrivers, socket set, pliers (vise grip, groove joint, needle nose, and lineman,) levels, tin snips, water pressure gauges, wire cutters, and of course safety gear such as eye protection, gloves, safety shoes and hearing protection. Still with us? Special jobs might require a bender, dremel tools, drill motor, pipe tap, or a water stop kit. Cw2341`
