Did you know that dry air in your home can affect your health? And since humidity is low here in Phoenix, you should pay extra careful attention!
Well, it would be incorrect to say that dry air inside your home causes allergies, per se; but it can worsen existing respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Dry air can impact existing conditions because (and we’re about to get a little “TMI” here, sorry!) there is fluid inside of your bronchial tubes and also fluid in the mucus in your nose/throat. All of this helps you cough and blow your nose if needed and for the job to be “productive.” Avoid letting your sinuses and airways become dry and irritated because of the dry Arizona air!
Dry air doesn’t “cause” allergies; only allergens do that, but does dry air make symptoms from existing allergies more annoying? Absolutely.
But it gets even worse. A study published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology in 2002 shows that dry air can affect your eyes too. If there’s not enough humidity in the air, it affects your tear production. And we don’t mean crying – it’s essential for your eyes to be able to moisturize themselves to protect your cornea.[1]
Using a portable humidifier, diffuser, or vaporizer is a great idea; however, a portable humidifier is inferior to a whole-home humidifier for a couple of reasons. First, the apparent reason is that the portable humidifier only works in one room at a time. In contrast, a whole-home humidifier is connected to the hot air coming from the furnace and your water tank and can deliver moist (sorry, we know people hate that word!) air evenly throughout the home.
If you find yourself coughing and blowing your nose to no avail and with itchy dry eyes, even after you have taken your Benadryl, then the culprit could be the dry air in your home.
Plus, because a whole-home system is connected to your water supply, you have the advantage of an unlimited supply, as opposed to a portable humidifier, which needs to be filled back up and maintained. Portable humidifiers also tend to breed bacteria if not cleaned!
