For more than 50 years, Parker & Sons has kept Arizona families cool. This summer, the company went beyond everyday service calls with a heartfelt Act of Kindness that gave one East Valley family more than just comfort, it gave them peace of mind.
In August, Parker & Sons launched a campaign in honor of National Senior Citizen Day (August 21). The initiative invited family, friends, and neighbors to nominate a senior in need of a new HVAC system. The response was overwhelming, more than 700 nominations poured in, each story a reminder of the resilience and challenges facing Valley seniors.
The first winner, Elmarie Seumptewa, received a brand-new system donated and installed on National Senior Citizen Day. (Read her story and watch the video here.) But the stories touched our team so deeply that we reached out to longtime partner Lennox, who generously agreed to donate a second unit. We provided the full installation and labor at no cost.
That second recipient was Reginald “Reggie” Garnett, a 74-year-old Vietnam veteran and longtime Valley resident. For the past eight years, Reggie has been raising his late wife’s three grandchildren in their Mesa home, all while living on a fixed income and working part-time at Ruggiero’s Ace Hardware in East Mesa.
Until now, the family relied on a nearly 30-year-old air conditioner that had broken down three times in the past year, leaving them without cooling for as long as eight days. Reggie shared that during the most recent breakdown, his 12-year-old grandchild had to stay at friends’ homes just to escape the heat.
“This is 10 times Christmas, absolutely amazing. I never expected it,” Reggie said on install day. “It’s like hitting the lottery, but better, because this will actually save me money and keep my family safe.”
We weren’t the only ones inspired by Reggie’s story. His coworkers at Ace Hardware proudly rallied behind him, donating paint and supplies for his entire home so he could finally complete a long-standing home project. His store manager, Eric, praised the decision:
“You do so much for other people, you don’t do for yourself,” Eric said. “Since I’ve met him, all he’s done is think about his family and community. Finally, he’s getting what he deserves.”
At Parker & Sons, we believe giving back to our community is just as important as the services we provide.
“Parker & Sons has been in the Valley for over 50 years now, and it’s been ingrained in us to give back to our customers as well,” said Bob Cannon, VP of Sales at Parker & Sons. “The best part of my job is not just changing out AC units or water heaters, it’s being able to actually get involved with the community and make a real difference.”
This Act of Kindness was also covered by ABC15, Channel 12, and YurView, highlighting the impact local businesses can make when they step up together.
