Is Your Toilet Suffering After You Hosted Thanksgiving?

November 3, 2022

Your plumbing takes a beating during the holidays! It works hard all year long, but it takes a real beating during the holidays. Between all the cooking, cleaning, and entertaining, your plumbing gets a workout like never before. If you’re not careful, all that holiday cheer can quickly become a plumbing nightmare.

Here’s what you need to know to get your plumbing back in shape after the holiday rush.

Post-Holiday Plumbing Tips

  1. Don’t pour grease down the drain – Grease is one of the worst enemies of your plumbing. When hot grease cools, it can harden and clog your pipes. Instead of pouring grease down the drain, let it cool in a can or jar and dispose of it in the trash. Don’t pour the grease from cooking turkey down the drain. Turkey fat can solidify at lower temperatures than other types of grease, making it even more likely to clog your pipes!

  2. Watch what you flush – We all know that toilet paper belongs in the toilet and nothing else. But during the holidays, people tend to flush all sorts of things down the toilet that they wouldn’t normally flush. From paper towels to baby wipes, flushing anything other than toilet paper can cause major problems for your plumbing. Be sure to remind your guests what can and cannot be flushed down the toilet.

  3. Don’t overload your garbage disposal – Your garbage disposal is designed to handle small food scraps. It’s not meant to be a catch-all for all your holiday leftovers. Avoid putting large pieces of food, bones, or greasy foods down your garbage disposal. If you must use it, be sure to run plenty of cold water while it’s running to keep everything moving through smoothly.

When the holidays are over, it’s time to get back to business as usual. Before you do, take some time to make sure your plumbing is up for the task. A little post-holiday maintenance will go a long way toward keeping your plumbing in good shape all year long.
