Plants Can Help Improve Indoor Air Quality

June 7, 2022

Did you know that plants can help improve indoor air quality? That’s because plants produce oxygen and absorb toxins – and our homes are more toxic than you might think!

Most of the pollution in our homes comes from building materials like paint pigments and lead because even if you think your home is free from lead, it may still contain trace amounts from various sources. The other primary source of toxins comes from cleaning supplies and personal care products, which release VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the air. Another significant source of indoor pollution is benzene, which is found in glue, cleaning products, and cigarette smoke. Overall, our homes are full of toxins that can be harmful to our health – but there are ways to combat indoor pollution, and one of them is by using plants.

As you already know, plants produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, helping to improve the quality of the air we breathe. They also help remove VOCs from the air, including benzene, trichloroethylene, xylene, toluene, and ammonia. Yes, ammonia!  Believe it or not, some houseplants can act as natural air purifiers, removing ammonia from the air and helping to improve indoor air quality.

Some of the plants able to do this most effectively are:

  • Bamboo palm
  • Boston fern
  • Chrysanthemum
  • English ivy
  • Gerbera daisy
  • Golden pothos
  • Marginata
  • Mother-in-law’s tongue (Yes, this is an actual plant.)
  • Peace lily
  • Aloe plant

They will make your home look more beautiful, and they’ll also help you breathe easier. A study conducted by NASA called the  Clean Air Study found that certain plants can remove up to 87% of VOCs from the air in just 24 hours. So if you’re looking for ways to improve your indoor air quality, consider adding some plants to your home!

Plants aren’t the only way to help improve your home’s air quality. The Air Scrubber eliminates as much as 99.9% of the dangerous contaminants that are in the air inside your home. The Air Scrubber is a revolutionary new device that scrubs the air inside your home of hazardous pollutants like bacteria, viruses, mold spores, dust mites, and allergens. It also reduces odors, smoke, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

If you’re looking for ways to improve your indoor air quality, consider adding some plants to your home – and also consider the Air Scrubber!
