Cold Temperatures Aren’t the Only Cause of Pipe Bursts

Pipes bursting is something we usually don’t think about until it’s too late. Other parts of the country are at risk of their pipes busting because of freezing temperatures, but there are other things that cause pipes to burst. It’s important to educate yourself before an emergency happens, so that you have the knowledge needed to make the best decisions in that situation.

Learning why pipes burst and how to help prevent them is the first step in the learning process. Aside from freezing, pipes can burst from not being secured properly, water pressure issues and corrosion. Pipes are built to last a long time, but that doesn’t mean they’re meant to last forever.

What to do when you have a pipe burst:

• Immediately shut off the water to prevent further water damage.
• Turn off your HVAC system.
• Turn off any electric devices.
• Cover your electric breaker box.

• Start removing any water that you can with buckets, a shop vac, your sump pump or pans.

• If filing an insurance claim document any damage by taking photos.
