Answering Common Questions: How Long Will My Water Heater Last?

Welcome back to the Parker & Sons blog. As we discussed in our last post, we are setting a little time aside this month to talk about some of the most common questions our service professionals are asked during a typical day out on the job.

There are a lot of these questions, and to the people asking them, they are usually the most important question in the entire world at the time. Of course, we are not talking massive existential questions like, “What is the meaning of life?”, “How was the universe created?”,or “What should I get for lunch?”, but rather more pertinent questions that apply to our quotidian lives. Questions like, “How long is this water heater that I just drop $800 on going to last me?”

Luckily for you, and everyone else out there purchasing water heaters, Parker & Sons is here to drop some knowledge and answer the tough questions.

Q: How Long Does an Average Water Heater Last?

This is actually a pretty easy question to answer, while the variance can be quite high depending on the brand, quality, and style of the water heater, your average unit has a lifespan of about fifteen years. Traditional tank water heaters will generally fall on the younger end of this spectrum while newer tankless water heaters can often last up to twenty years. As with most things, there is balance in this equation. While tankless water heaters often last longer, they are most expensive when you purchase them.

The next logical question after this one is typically, “What can I do to extend the life of my water heater?”

Again, the answer is simple. Maintenance. Attending to maintenance. If you fix small issues of normal wear before they have a chance to develop into something more severe, you can dramatically extend the life of you water heater.
