Did you see sudden, alarming spikes in your bill last winter? Now that winter is over, we want to help you reflect so this doesn’t happen again!

We know, the temperature here in Phoenix is back up in the 70s again. You probably don’t want to think about winter anymore! But we want to help you stop this from happening next winter. And, did you know, many of the same reasons that caused you to have high heat bills last winter could also cause you to have high cooling bills this summer. So listen up!

HVAC issues

One of the most common causes for a sudden energy bill spike is a problem with your furnace or heat pump. There’s a chance that your system isn’t getting enough of a refrigerant charge, which can make it less efficient, driving up your heating bills. This can also cause your HVAC system to fail early! How will you know if this is happening, other than high electric bills? Well, if your HVAC system cycles on and off all the time, never reaching the temperature you set on the thermostat … it could be a refrigerant issue, and also cause your bills to skyrocket!

Leaky ducts / lack of insulation

Another possible reason for an electric bill spike is that your home wasn’t ready for the seasonal weather (hot or cold). How could it not be ready, you ask? Well, one big reason is that air is leaking out of your home … which is basically the same thing as money leaking out of your home!

This could be in the form of duct leaks, or insufficient insulation. One of the main things our customers ask us is, “How do you know if your ducts aren’t properly sealed?” One symptom could be that part of your home that is always way hotter in summer and colder in winter than the rest of your house. This could mean your ducts are leaky, and so is your wallet!

Also, insulation is very important when it comes to keeping your home cool in summer and warm in winter, without having to spend as much money to do so! It’s very important what type and grade of insulation you get, and factors such as thermal resistance and insulation depth can be what determines whether your electric bill is low or high! We are the experts in all types of insulation, but most of all blown-in whole-home insulation, so call Parker & Sons!

Voltage leak

So far, we’ve talked about more common reasons why your electric bill suddenly surges. But this last reason is also potentially dangerous: a voltage leak. This is more likely to happen if your electrical circuit has had water damage or been corroded. And a huge upswing in your energy bill may be the telltale sign of a voltage leak. It’s important to deal with this quickly, because it could shock you or your family, and can even break your appliances. That’s why yet another service Parker & Sons provides is electrical repairs and electrical safety inspections. Because, while saving money is important, staying safe is even more important!
