Okay, so Arizona might not be the coldest state in the nation. Or the second coldest. Or the 47th coldest. But our winters can get pretty chilly. It is not uncommon for night temperatures to hit the low 30s or even then high 20s during the winter time. If you don’t have a properly functioning heater, then things are going to get pretty chilly for you indeed. Before the winter begins in earnest, schedule a heating checkup with Parker & Sons. But before that, we are going to learn a little about heating!
Heating Fun Facts
First off, did you know that heating is the largest annual energy expense in most homes throughout the country? It probably comes as a surprise to those of us who live in the desert, but it is true. The average home expends 35 – 50 percent of its annual energy costs on heating. For them, saving on heating costs is the best way to lower the energy bill.
This next fact is a little less fun, but heating systems spew over a billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. Heating systems also account for almost 12 percent of the nation’s sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. For these reasons, individuals are becoming increasingly more interested in HVAC units which place a premium on efficiency.
Luckily, there are ways to cut down on heating costs and emissions without buy a whole new heating unit! People who are interested in energy efficiency with heating, concern themselves with many of the same things as we do when we are trying to reducing cooling costs during the summer. Sealing home air leaks, improving insulation, and optimizing home temperature distribution are all great ways to increase energy efficiency.
Out final fun fact, did you know that heat is measure in something called BTUs? That is right, one BTU, or British thermal unit, is equivalent to approximately one standard kitchen match.
