Beating the Heat, Staying Cool, Without Breaking the Bank (Part Two)

When it comes to beating the heat and staying cool, it is important to have more than a few tricks up your sleeve. In our last post, we offered you the timeless advice to stay hydrated and to jump in the pool. They are easy, actionable tricks that you can put into effect right away. Best of all, if you already have a pool, this won’t cost you a dime! Of course, our wisdom does not end there. We have plenty more tips and tricks for staying cool and beating the heat without breaking the bank.

  1. Have we mentioned water?

Drink and swimming are not the only ways to use water to stay cool. Know you are going to spend time outdoors during the summer? Soak a bandana or hat and wear it on your head. The gradual evaporation of water will help keep you cool for some time. Just hanging out in the house but you don’t want to crank up the air conditioning? Running cold water over your wrists can help reduce your temperature for almost an hour!

  1. Dress for happiness

Or rather, dress as little as possible. Clothing acts as insulation, keeping heat in next to your body. Wear shorts and a t-shirt whenever possible. Try to find light clothing made out of breathable, natural fabric such as cotton or linen. Avoid synthetic materials like polyester. Avoid wearing dark colored clothing which will absorb light and heat from the sun, cooking you like a Thanksgiving turkey. The one item of clothing which you should add to your wardrobe in the summer is a hat. When you are outside, a hat will provide crucial protection from the harsh rays of the sun. The right hat could also revolutionize your style game.
